Tackle Tomorrow, Dallas ISD (DISD), and the TEXpress STEM Volunteer Team recently hosted their final bridge-building competition of the school year at Holland Elementary in South Dallas. Twenty top 5th graders earned the opportunity to be part of a team competing for the best constructed truss bridge using popsicle sticks and wood glue. TEXpress provided engineers for each team and employee volunteers to assist and encourage the students.

The three-hour program consisted of learning the basic principles and science of building a truss bridge, and two hours of pure competition among the five teams. As the clocked ticked down, the focus on the finish became very intense for the students and adults. At the end, each team presented their final construction and explained why it was the best bridge.

And then it was on to the day’s reward for all their hard work: a pizza party provided by our newest partner, Sam’s Club.

The five bridges dried overnight, and the next day were judged for durability using a new, sophisticated technical process designed by the TEXpress Team engineers. The winning bridge withstood up to 264.5 pounds of pressure.

TEXpress congratulates all the schools who participated this year and looks forward to working with Tackle Tomorrow, DISD and Sam’s Club to begin strategizing about the events for the 2024/2025 school year!
