Vehicle Classifications Determine Toll Rates
How your vehicle is classified determines the tolls you pay when traveling on a TEXpress corridor. The NTE, LBJ and NTE 35W TEXpress corridors use vehicle size and shape to determine the classification. Other TEXpress corridors utilize axle count to determine the toll rates.
Paying By Shape and Size of Vehicle
The shape and size of your vehicle determine the toll prices on the LBJ TEXpress Lanes, NTE TEXpress Lanes and NTE 35W TEXpress Lanes. This classification system and its related policy and guidelines were approved by the Texas Department of Transportation and the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
While motorcycles, cars, SUVs, and most vans and pickup trucks pay the same toll rate, large and extra-large trucks and vehicles towing a trailer pay a higher price. The reasons for this are two-fold: the larger and heavier the vehicle, the more damage they cause to the roadway and the more capacity they take away from other vehicles in the TEXpress lanes.
Advancements in technology have allowed TEXpress operators to measure vehicle size and shape with much greater precision and accuracy. Most drivers who choose to travel in the TEXpress lanes are not impacted by the upgraded measurement technology, which was installed beginning in 2025. However, vehicles that are more than 240 inches or 20 feet in length*, regardless of make or model, will be classified in a higher category and will pay higher tolls.
*Vehicle size equals length of vehicle, plus length of any trailer(s), if applicable.
